Parts List

Tuesday, April 05, 2005
I just finished putting together a parts list, this time with a cheaper microcontroller. The microcontroller I will be using is the Mini AVR Robot Controller which will only be $85.95 assembled and tested. To drive the robot, I'll use two Solarbotics GM8 Gearmotors coming to a cost of $16.95. With some other minor stuff I need the cost of the project will be about $125, so please click those ads and put in your zip code. It all helps a lot.

Weekend Update

Sunday, April 03, 2005
This weekend I got a bit done, but not as much as I wanted to. Hopefully I'll get more done over the week. No new CAD models... once theres something that needs to be built I'll CAD it out and post it, but for right now i'm just making the chassis.

I picked out the microcontroller I'm going to get for MikeBot. It's the Zorin ModCon chip. It uses a Motorola HC11 chip with a plentiful amount of 32K RAM. It also has 4 PWM servo outputs, which should be plentiful for MikeBot. I'm going to buy some Airtronics 94102 Servos and modify them for 360 degree rotation.

Some very basic construction of the chassis is complete. I decided to change the width from 1/4" to 3/8" boards in order for it to be more versatile, and less likely to break. I'm not going to be able to work on the actual electronical/programming aspect of MikeBot until my birthday (May 30) because of lack of money.

Also, I need ideas on a new name. The domain MikeBot.com is already taken, plus I'd just like a more original name. Whoever's idea wins will get their link on the front page of the blog, just post your ideas in the comments.

Until later...
- Mike

First Post

I decided to get one of these fancy bloggy things so I can journal what happens as I create the MikeBot. Maybe some people will click some of those ads and put in their zip code and help make this project a little less out of pocket *wink wink*. Seriously though, I get $1.10 for each zip code, so if you have the time, it only takes 10 seconds. Donations will also be accepted, with 100% of each donation going directly towards buying the stuff I need for the robot.

Zip Only! MP3 Player

I started this project March 30, 2005 and it is currently in the design stage. It's going to be a 3 tiered robot, about 12 inches high and 9 inches wide. The first tier will contain the PWM Motors, the 2nd will hold the processor and other electronics, and the first will be the carrying platform =)

Like I said, MikeBot is currently in design stages. I am in the process of making a 3D Inventor Model of what it will look like. As I work on this, I'll be posting it. The material for MikeBot hasn't been decided yet, but most likely will be Wood (not metal, as the CAD model may suggest). If there is another cheap, light, and strong material out there please be sure to suggest it.

Wrapping it up for today, I'll post more as I get more done.
